Are you a group interested in volunteering? The Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail believes that the Mount Vernon Trail and the George Washington Memorial Parkway should be enjoyed by all and that everyone should be given the opportunity to be a steward of the park. With 18 miles of trail crossing Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax counties, volunteer events are easily accessible by those living in Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Past groups include corporate, federal, religious, military, university alumni, university greek organizations, and scouting groups.
If your group is interested in working with us and will have more than 10 people attending an event, please reach out via email (hello@mountvernontrail.org) at least one week before the event. Please also ensure everyone volunteering with your group registers through the relevant EventBrite link so we can better plan work scope and prepare supplies for the event.
Volunteers activities include: removing invasive vegetation, picking up trash, trail edging, and removing branches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can volunteer?
Anyone and everyone can volunteer. Volunteers have ranged in age from 2 to 85 years old. No training is required.
How can my group volunteer?
Signing up to volunteer as a group is easy. Check out the list of upcoming volunteer events on our website and have all members of your group register to attend via EventBrite.
If you plan on having more than 10 people come on a particular weekend, just let us know via email no less than one week prior to the day of the event. Doing so gives us ample time to prepare and helps us gather information so we can promote your group’s attendance on social media after the event.
Groups that contact us less than one week prior to the event or do not contact us before registering run several risks, including:
- Hitting event capacity limits before all of their group members can successfully register, which can split the group;
- Not having enough tools, supplies, or work scope available to group members or to other members of the public, which can make the event less fun; or
- Not having a healthy ratio of volunteer leaders to volunteers, which limits our ability to connect and learn more about you.
We want all of our volunteers to have a great experience and feel motivated to return for a future event!
What are the dates for volunteering?
We typically schedule volunteer events a month in advance. All upcoming events are on our website. If there is a particular date that your group has in mind that is not on the website, please send us an email letting us know the dates and expected number of volunteers so we can try to accommodate the request.
Can you sign service volunteer paperwork?
Yes, we are happy to sign any service hour paperwork you need.
